Why sleep matters

Looking to achieve an optimal state of wellness? If so, you need to start taking your sleep habits more seriously. Most people don’t quite understand the role that sleep will play in their ability to achieve an optimal state of well-being, but make no mistake about it, if you aren’t sleeping enough, you are going to be paying the price.

Let’s look at how too little sleep will influence you and then provide you with some quick tips to help you get more sleep into your day.

Sleep And Your Metabolic Rate

The first thing to know about sleep is that if you aren’t getting enough, you’ll be suffering from a slower than normal metabolism. As you can imagine, this is very bad news if fat loss is a goal of yours.

Those who sleep enough at night are going to experience a faster metabolic rate 24/7, making fat loss feel that much easier.

Sleep And Recovery

Next, sleep is also going to be essential for recovery from your workout sessions as well. After a hard workout, your muscles are tired and broken down and sleep is the primary time when you will repair them.

If you don’t get enough sleep, it’s going to take you longer between workout sessions to start feeling better again and this means less frequent workouts and a slower rate of progress.

Sleep And Hunger

Sleep is also going to have a direct correlation with your hunger level as well. If you aren’t sleeping enough, don’t be surprised if you find yourself ravenous throughout the day.

You’ll naturally crave carbohydrate dense foods because your body is looking for energy. What it really needs however is improved sleep quality.

If you’re well rested, you’ll be far better able to stick to any fat loss diet plan.

Sleep And Insulin Sensitivity

Finally, lack of sleep is also going to decrease your insulin sensitivity rates, so this means that you may start to convert the carbohydrates you consume to body fat more easily.

Those with good insulin sensitivity not only stay leaner in the long term, but they also help ward off diabetes as well.

So as you can see, sleep is critical to your success. To help you sleep optimally, practice a stress releasing activity such as journaling, taking a hot bath, or meditating before bed and make sure that you turn down the temperature slightly. Avoid eating a heavy meal or consuming any products with caffeine and you should find yourself falling into a deep sleep sooner and getting the rest you need.
